Fake doctor AI scam targets Mandarin-speaking community

Victoria Police warns fraudsters are fleecing victims of tens of thousands of dollars by using artificial intelligence to phone victims with fake doctor calls.

The scammers are targeting the Mandarin-speaking Chinese community, police say.

One victim has lost $50,000 to the scam and another has been scammed out of $40,000.

Police have issued a warning to Victoria's Mandarin-speaking community about a fake doctor scam responsible for stealing tens of thousands of dollars from some victims.

Scammers are using artificial intelligence to clone the voicers of doctors, general practitioners and surgeons.

Detectives said the fraudsters were using the victims name to appear credible before instructing them to buy gift cards and provide the code via text message.

Ten reports of the scam were received last month, including from one victim who lost $50,000 to the scam after buying gift cards across a three-day period before they became suspicious.
