Germany news: VW to step up cost-cutting program

The board of trustees for Berlin's bid to hold the Olympics and Paralympics have written to Elif Eralp, who is poised to become the city-state's next governing mayor after her Left Party came top in Sunday state elections, calling on her to drop her opposition.

"The campaign is over. Now is the time to weigh the arguments, listen to one another, and re-examine the positions taken during the campaign in light of the concept that is now available," the letter states.

"That's why we appeal to you, Ms Eralp: Please take the time to carefully review Berlin+ and the concept we developed together," it continues.

The board hopes that it can discuss the matter with Eralp ahead of the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) extraordinary general meeting on Saturday.

During that meeting, the DOSB will select Germany's candidate to host the Olympics in 2036, 2040 and 2044. Munich and the Rhine-Ruhr region have also put in bids to host the Games

After the election win, Eralp said she believed the city's bid to host the Olympics and Paralympics had virtually no chance of success.
