François Picard is pleased to welcome our sports editor, James Vasina, and Andreas Evargora, sports journalist and commentator. Evargora describes the current Manchester City case as unprecedented in scale: “This is nothing of the scale that we’ve seen before.” The case brings together an explosive mix of pressures confronting modern sport like never before: the multibillion-euro business of football, the legal and regulatory mechanisms designed to govern it, and the increasingly complex relationship between sport, political power and international investment.

What makes the Manchester City case particularly significant is both the scale of the allegations and the club’s unequivocal rejection of them.

The case involves more than 100 charges concerning financial reporting, contracts and alleged breaches relating to cooperation with the investigation. Manchester City maintains that it possesses irrefutable evidence in its defence. The proceedings have already involved an extensive independent panel process and remain subject to appeal. The implications are enormous.
