A former U.S. congressman and a former Trump White House staffer will square off on a Utah debate stage Tuesday as voters in the state's newly drawn First Congressional District consider who to send to the U.S. House.

Democrat Ben McAdams and Republican Riley Owen will face each other in an event at Salt Lake Community College, hosted by the Utah Debate Commission. PBS Utah is a media partner of the commission.

After a yearslong legal battle over redistricting, a Utah judge threw out a map drawn by GOP state legislators in November, saying it "fails to abide by and conform with the requirements" of a 2018 ballot measure approved by voters that created nonpartisan standards for drawing congressional districts.

The judge picked a map offered by the plaintiffs in the case, including the League of Women Voters of Utah and Mormon Women for Ethical Government. In the map, the newly drawn First Congressional District includes Salt Lake City, an increasingly Democratic-leaning area. The current incumbent, Republican Rep. Blake Moore, is running to represent the newly drawn Second Congressional District.
