Opposition Leader Angus Taylor has blamed "home-grown inflation" for the Reserve Bank's interest rate hike on Tuesday.

The head of the Australian Signals Directorate says Australia has enjoyed a "rare" level of engagement with frontier artificial intelligence labs.

The Home Affairs department has issued a directive to federal government departments to bolster their systems against AI threats.

ASD director-general Abigail Bradshaw says cybersecurity and patching vulnerabilities from AI is an ongoing process that isn't "set and forget".

She says Australia has enjoyed positive engagement with the labs with an aim of delivering positive outcomes.

Asked on ABC Radio National Breakfast whether Australia is still beholden to the companies giving the country access, Bradshaw agrees but says partnerships work both ways.

"We have unique insights, particularly from an intelligence perspective, but also from a cybersecurity perspective about how to optimise those technologies. So it's a give and take here," Bradshaw says.
